Hi guys. I am a true newbie. Got a 2g when it first came out really excited that I would be able to jailbreak and then found out it was a 2g. Argh!!!! Well, I'm really excited that it might be coming out soon.

But I am thoroughly confused about a lot of things. Can anybody just reply to this thread and give me a good introductory "for dummies"-kind-of explanation about things? Like.... after I jailbreak, will I have cydia, installer, etc? then I read about getting "sources". can someone explain that? do I have to set up something so I can get my sources? thirdly, a list of must-have apps so I can freely customize my ipod touch 32gb and what does each app do? finally, a link to somewhere where I can get the absolute top-ten 3rd party apps, and how do you get them onto your ipod touch. (sorry these are such obvious questions, but my searching capabilities are giving me a headache - i've been reading so many threads). thanks in advance.

    OK

Jailbreak, the actual jailbreak just means you have access to the filesystem of the ipod. Kind of like being able to access C:\Windows\ on your Windows PC.

Cydia and Installer will be on there and when you open them you can download 3rd party apps.

Sources are essentialy links to .xml files which hold the data cydia needs to download the files. For instance, www.website.com/repo.xml. Cydia then looks at the .xml file and would see something like.

    <Name> AppName
    <Version> 1.6
    <Coder> thehitman
    <link> www.anotherwebsite.com/AppName.zip

Each repo basicly contains hundreds of entrys like this, 1 for each application. Cydia processes this and displays it for you. Then when you click download it will look at the <link> bit in the xml file from the 'repo' (source) you added.

Therefore, in order to get a wider range of apps, different repos/sources should be added to cydia.

    Hope this helped.

No they are not the same. They do the same thing, but are different.

Both install 3rd party apps, installer used to be the best but cydia over took when we all switched over to 2.0.x firmware.

    Let me ask this please.

Regardless of how messed up something gets, the iPod can be restored to factory condition via iTunes.

    Is that a correct statement?

EDIT: NEvermind, found my answer below.. Thanks thehitman (you're not on Maddenmania, are you?)
