    Hi, i've been looking for a way to connect the ipod touch to the internet through the usb cable in case we're somewhere wifi is not an option. (Like for my self at work)
    it doesnt sound VERY complicated.
    I dont know if there's iptable or ip_forward on the ipod touch... but it could be ported

    Bothways could be just great, as in the ipod could be a usb wifi modem for the pc if the pc isnt connected to the internet.

    Im not sure if im very clear...? lol anyways thanx

    You can always but a wireless card for your computer and stream the internet from there.

    i would think it would be cool if you could plug an ethernet cable to it to have a LAN connection instead of wifi, ofcourse the ethernet cable would have to have the 30-pin plug at the end but i bet it could be made along with compatible software to enable it

    finally a solution, although quite long

    hey all, i think what you need to do is create an ad-hoc connection via ur laptop or pc's wifi, this allows you to share the internet connection to your ipod, i found this long but useful tutorial on another website, and no, it's not spam
    sorry but the pictures didn't work, probably no help anyway since they are in german or something

    How to connect Ipod Touch (Iphone) to PC via WI-FI
    Last night I spent several hours to set-up connection between my wife's Ipod Touch 8 GB and my PC via wi-fi. It is strange, but there is no detailed easily discovered desription of this procedure on the internet.

    Wifi connection between PC and Ipod Touch can be used to:

    * Work with applications which require internet connection: Safari, Mail, YouTube, Weather, Stocks and many others third-party applications
    * Upload ebook from Stanza Desktop to your Ipod Touch/Iphone
    * Transfer files between Ipod Touch and PC (additional application required)

    Many people have problems to set-up wi-fi connection. I hope that my detailed description will help all watch and Ipod/Iphone enthusiasts.

    Source of some ideas is one thread on Social.technet.microsoft.com Please take into account that you test below mentioned description of set up on your own risk. Description fits to small home office. If you want to connect Ipod or Iphone via wi-fi to your corporate network, please contact your IT administrator and security officer first. All comments are welcomend, especially security oriented comments.

    All Windows texts, button description are translated from my Czech version of Windows, genuine English labels can be little bit different from my text.

    Requirements:

    * Apple Ipod Touch or Iphone with latest updates, not jail-broken
    * PC, which is connected to wired router via cable. Router (Edimax) is connected to ADSL modem. Wired connection is configured and internet is working without any problems
    * PC has genuine Windows XP with SP3 and all other updates
    * You have bought usb wi-fi dongle Edimax
    * Router has IP address different than 192.168.0.1. Why? During set-up of ICS (Internet Connection Shared), Windows assign IP address to shared network card as 192.168.0.1 and this could cause troubles. Recommended adress of router is 192.168.1.xx or 192.168.2.xx
    * Router assign IP addresses (DHCP server) in range from 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.200
    * You know IP address of your DNS server (Start -> Accessories -> Command prompt -> write "nslookup" and write down IP adress)

    My complet configuration of wired conenction to router and internet is following (translation from Czech):
    DHCP enabled . . . . . . : yes
    Automatic configuration : yes
    IP Address . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.100 (will be different in your case)
    Subnet mask . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . : 192.168.2.1 (router address)
    Server DHCP . . . .. . . : 192.168.2.1 (router address)
    Server DNS . . . . . . . : 194.228.41.65 (DNS server is manually entered: Start-> Network connection-> )
    (Start -> Accessories -> Command prompt -> write "ipconfig -all")

    Set-up has three phases:

    * Sharing of wired connection to router
    * Create wi-fi network
    * Set up Ipod Touch (Iphone)

    A: Set up sharing of wired connection to router

    1. Wired router is configured as decribed above, internet is working
    2. Start -> Network places -> Netwok Connections -> Selected wired connection-> Properties -> check "allow sharing" (picture 1). Then you you have to select all serviced, which will be shared (picture 1 and 2)
    3. Windows will inform you that IP adress 192.168.0.1 has been assigned to network card

    B. Create ad-hoc wi-fi network

    1. Install USB wi-fi dongle drivers and plug-in USB dongle and wait untill Windows infrom you that new device is ready to be used
    2. Start -> Network places -> Netwok Connections -> Selected Wireless connection-> Properties -> TCP/IP protocol-> properties
    1. IP adress 192.168.0.1 (address assigned to shared network card by Windows)
    2. Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    3. DNS - write down DNS from nslookup command

    3. Start -> Network places -> Netwok Connections -> Selected Wireless connection-> Properties -> Wireless networks -> Add network (Picture 5)
    1. Enter network name
    2. Set Security mode and password (minimum should be Shared,WEP and 5 chars password - letters, numbers, other chars) (Picture 6)
    3. Check "ad-hoc network" (Picture 6)
    4. In list "Connection" select that connection will be estabilished automatically when network is available

    C: set up Ipod Touch (Iphone)

    1. Settings -> Wi-FI ->On
    2. Connect to wifi network created in step B (click on network name and enter password)
    3. Ipod should connect to network - connection is signalized by icon on top-left corner
    4. Check if internet is working

    If internet is not working

    1. Settings -> Wi-FI -> click on blue righ arrow related to wi-fi network created in step B and you will se network connection details
    2. When you see network connection details for the first time, you should see:
    1. DHCP is selected
    2. IP address is filled
    3. Subnet Mask has value 255.255.255.0
    4. Router is 192.168.0.1
    5. DNS is 192.168.0.1
    6. HTTP Proxi is OFF
    3. If DNS is not filled, fill it manually, other relevant field are fileld automaticaly
    4. If this is not working, change "DHCP" to "Static" and fill down all details manually, IP adress can be 192.168.0.169. You can replace 169 by any other number <256 except 0

    Hope this will work:) all comments are welcome.
