Is the Intel i7 (Core i7 920) worth the money?

My brother is planing on building a new computer, but i think the i7 is kind of costly, but is wicked godly.

What's he using it for? Gaming might or might not be worth it (runs great (supposedly) but the price is horrendous (not for the cpu but for the advanced mobo and ddr3 memory)). For gaming i would go with a dual core. For intense multitasking i would go with a quad core. Intel all the way.

It is going to be used kind of for gaming (Any game i can get for free) and for casual internet browsing.

The thing is, i want to get something that wont get phased out after 6 months. I want my computer to be able to last for 3-4 years like the computer im using right now. The best stuff of 3 years ago is in the computer i have right now. Its an awesome computer, but its good to have a really good computer, and good computer for backup on the side, so that i can get rid of this crappy ass VAIO that i have next to me.

I dont want it to be the best computer in 3-4 years, but i want it to be a good computer and be able to use most software that is going to be released in 3-4 years.
