There are different problems that have different solutions.

    1) SSH and delete "RemotePackages.plist" found in var/mobile/Library/Installer
    2) Delete a few applications via SSH or Installer, and install BossTool under "Utilities" and free disk space.
    3) Run this command in Installer to set permissions
    chmod 4755 /Applications/Installer.app/Installer
More info on SSH and commands here

Also, if there is an application you recently installed, SSH and delete it.

As for your backup with installer, you need to run these 2 commands in order for it to run correctly.
    chmod 4755 /Applications/Installer.app/Installer
    chown -R root:wheel /Applications/Installer.app

You can run them inside the ipod with terminal or from a comp with some type of ssh like winscp i think

ssh into your ipod using winscp adn then at the top there will be a black box that says terminal.
