I've searched and read a few posts on this topic but none have helped so far, when I try to download applications via installer it finishes the download part and then tries to install it but in the middle of the process my installer closes... please help

its because u dont have any more memory so
what u need to do is uninstall a app
    install bosstool

then open boss tool and freedisk space
click on move fonts and move applications and go to installer and install ur apps

its not the memory on your media parititon, but on your original OS parition for apps. Uninsatall a few apps, use bosstool, then you should be fine until you restore again.

Try resetting permissions for installer to 4755 by running this command

    chmod 4755 /Applications/Installer.app/Installer

I wish I could do that now, I restarted my ipod and now it won't start up, it has the apple logo and the spinning wheel, I can still access it through iTunes.

Use a program that doesn't require wifi, total commander for instance, and try replacing the N45AP.plist file found in System/Library/Coreservices/Springboard.app

This may resolve it, or if you recently installed an app that caused this, delete the folder. If this doesn't work, I'm afraid a restore will be necessary...
