As you know, crApple didn't release a firmware update for the iPhone 2G. Now apps are going to be updated and soon most of them will "require the 4.0 update".

So I wanted to know if there's a way to trick the App Store into letting me intall these apps.

Even if you could download them, your iPhone wouldn't run them.

some can run, but not all naturally. i tired with ibooks last night. after installing ibooks on my 3gs 3.1.2 it crashed and i had to wait 5min for the iphone to turn back on. it was stalled on the apple logo. imovie can work as long as you turn off the front facing camera for the required hardware.

the file you need to edit /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist
    change 3.1.2 with 4.0 & build version with: 8A293

...now, does anyone know if there is away to get ibooks running on 3.1.2? im assuming no.***note please dont tell me what you think. if you think its possible or not.*** im looking for people you have done it (obviously something different from me) or experimented and failed as i have ^^

@kurt178: Same here. Edited iBooks a week ago just like you have just said, installed on my iPod touch just fine. Tried to use it, but my iPod crashed and turned itself off. Had to wait 4 it to restart.

I would love it if I could use it on my iPod. Please, someone figure out how to make this work.

The reason these iOS4 apps won't run is because apple added new hooks and made more resources available, right? When our phones are jailbroken, don't we have access to everything? There should be a way to trick iOS3.x into running apps outside of the constraints that apple sets, so that way iOS4 can still have access to what it needs.

It could be possible. But i see it as being more hassle than its worth.

You can install them right from the app store if you fake your firmware version.
