about the jb, I have some questions.

When I sync my iPod, iTunes says "Backing up Eddie's iPod". What is it backing up? Is it keeping a list of the songs I have on there in case I need to restore?

There is a reason why I ask.

I'm assuming that jailbreaking my iPod will wipe it clean at some point during the process. Am I right?

My wife and I have a combined music library of about 5000 songs. This means that we both manage our music manually. When I got my iPod, I very carefully and meticulously tagged all my music and made sure that the album art was correct and stuff like that. I wanted my music library on my iPod to be perfect...and it is. I have roughly 2100 songs on it that are all tagged and when I scroll through my music in Coverflow, I don't have a single album that is represented by one of those generic music note icons. It took me about 4 solid days to acheive this state of nirvana. So....back to my question-

Will iTunes restore my music the way it is now? Or will I once again have to cherrypick which songs go on the iPod? I realize that if I do, then at least I won't have to worry about tagging them with the right album art, but it would still be a pain in the ass.

    Thanks for your time.

Jailbreaking will not remove your media.
The backup process backs up everything on your iPod EXCEPT jailbreak stuff.

Yeah...but what does that mean? It's not backing up 10 gigs worth of music. I wouldn't expect it to; it's all on my computer to begin with.

So what is it backing up? If everything that is on my iPod exists on my computer, what is there to back up?

It has a specific backup file type; these files tell iTunes about what is on your iPod.

Nope. Apps are already on your computer, and pictures aren't backed up.

It backs up settings and a "config" database of what media is on it.

i found that making a playlist of the songs you have selected to be on your ipod is a good way to store the music YOU want on your ipod instead of worrying about clicking all those darn little boxes lol. and if you have anyone else syncing their ipod to your library its a good way to keep what you want intact without worrying about newly added music or if someone clicks a box on accident. i just feel its easier to manage one huge playlist if you have a lot of songs that you dont want on your ipod.
