    "Hardware limitations"
    That's a horrible excuse, I have a jailbroken 2g, only multitasking enabled...
It's just as fast as before!!
They should've disabled homescreen wallpaper and enabled multitasking for mb&mc 8gb because it has no difference to normally running ios4 with no jailbreak.
Apple have been lazy and not taken the time to 'experiment' with the firmware.

People even on this forum have reported that the stock 3.1 ran slow on their 2G's, so imagine 4.0.

Apple don't want to support devices which may not perform as well. The reason they didn't allow wallpapers is because the icon animation with the background on did not perform that well.

Doesn't seem to be too many people supporting it right now in the poll...

Um.. Doesn't multitasking tear up the battery life? I'd see that as a reason not to release it for older generations.

i think they just want you to buy another new idevice. I bet next year when iOS 5 is out ipod 2G and iphone 3G users and below won't be supported and ipod touch 3G and iphone 3gs will have "limited support"

I agree. They could have easily added a toggle in setting to enable/disable wallpapers and multitasking. Let the users decide if it's worth the performance hit. Whats wrong with that? Personally I find multitasking on my 3G usable and don't notice to many problems as long as I keep the multitasking in check.
