Then go ahead if you're willing to risk it.

so... i am getting a 3gs from a friend. assuming the bootrom is ok, and i update it (never been jailbroken, no shsh blobs :( ) to 5.1.1, would that automatically upgrade the baseband to be un-unlockable? do i need to create a no baseband ipsw of 5.1.1 with redsnow to be able to keep an unlock on a new firmware?

You should always use no baseband IPSW's, but redsn0w can't do that for 5.1.1 yet, so do it with 5.1 (they're maybe still signing).

ValleyForge is correct, but I don't think 5.1 is still signing. I would personally recommend waiting until redsn0w is updated. I believe the next one should support it, don't see why not. If you do try to restore to 5.1 and they werent signing, you would be stuck in recovery mode.

UPDATE: Try making a no baseband IPSW with redsn0w 0.9.11b1, the latest and greatest :D

Correct. Find out the bootrom and follow the updated guide. If you run into any issues, please let me know and I can update the guide to be more specific.
