how will iMessage work? Will you have a number or is it by user ID? Also, is it like BBM where you can see the other person is typing a message etc?

iMessage will include delivery and read receipts, and typing indication, so you know if the person has received your message and if they are typing back. Apple's iMessage will also have secure end-to-end encryption.

As far as numbers or ID are concerned, I would assume that it would be your phone number if you're using an iPhone, and your Apple ID email address if you're using an iPod touch or iPad (much like FaceTime).

Yeah sound exactly like BBM but done correctly lol can't wait. I had a BB for a while, and BBM was really the only thing I enjoyed about it, otherwise the phone was boring, no good apps.

Ok so because no one here but I really knows how iMessage works, let me explain:

iMessage uses a verification system similar to Facetime. When your phone is verified, you can begin to send and receive iMessages from contacts that have their number verified. When sending an iMessage, the speech bubble will be blue. When sending an SMS, it will be green.

I'll post an example image in a bit.

    [EDIT]Kiks52 nailed it!

Here you can see all sorts of screenshots of iOS 5 Beta. Very first photo shows an example of an iMessage compared to a regular SMS.

I wish they'd combine FaceTime with iMessage and recreate iChat on iOS. I LOVE iChat!
