Try only closing iTunes with the "X" button (ie. don't end any processes in Task Manager).

Also, if you are using Vista/Win 7, change the compatibility mode to XP service pack 2.

    Edit:
    walkthrough -

    - Download BlackRa1n for your OS (www.blackra1n.com)
    - Plug your iPod into the PC. Let it load any drivers, iTunes should open automatically (open it manually if it doesn't).
    - Close iTunes by clicking the X button. Do not end any processes in task manager.
    - Run BlackRa1n, click the "Make it Ra1n" button.
    - GeoHot's image should display on your iPod. The iPod should then reboot.

If you are still experiencing problems and are running Vista/Windows 7:
    - Right click the blackra1n icon, select properties.
    - Click the "capatability tab", and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for", and select "Windows XP Service Pack 2" from the drop-down list.
    - Click Apply, then OK, and rerun blackra1n following the above steps.

Make sure that nothing else is running in the background. Just blackra1n.

Right, so you're still in recovery mode now?

What exactly is on your iPods screen?

EDIT: If your screen simply has the Connect to iTunes logo (usb cable, black screen etc), Simply run black rain again to start your device.

    Try this:

Force your iPod to restart. Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together until your iPod shows the Apple logo, then let go. While it's booting up, open iTunes and wait for iTunes to register that your device is connected.

Once the iPod shows up in iTunes, make sure you have 3.1.2 (firmware) and then open Blackra1n. Before pressing the "Make it Ra1n" button, close iTunes just by pressing the X button, then click "Make it Ra1n" and all should go well. Don't interfere with the process (i.e. pressing any buttons on your iPod, opening things on your computer, etc.)
