Okay, I'm hearing about this whole signing up whatever for your iPhone 3GS to be able to downgrade, or jailbreak or whatever.

I have NO IDEA about this all, I went on Saurik's site and read his long essay, and I am left clueless.

Can someone briefly explain to me about this whole signing up business?

I'm on 3.1, by the way, I got it like that.

I seriously have no idea on what's going on.

Apple has started signing each restore to verify the integrity of the firmware file and device itself. This is all fine, but the problems come when you would like to downgrade. Once apple pushes out an update, they stop signing restores for the past firmware, therefore you have to save the signature of your device and then replay it back when you want to downgrade (You can do this by chaning the place iTunes looks for the signature by changing the hosts files and redirecting to Saurik's server).

That's half the story and I'm sure I've gotten it all wrong

    D), but that's a very simplistic version.

    Oh right.
So this only applies to people who want to downgrade?

Err... Not entirely, there is a bug in a mode of iBoot called iBSS (the mode is called iBSS that is) that means we can sign any modified version of the firmware infected with the bug (such was the case in 3.0).

    Oh right.
Well, my only worry, is will I be able to jailbreak with my current firmware in the future?

    That's all I'm worrying about.

If the Dev Teams find a vulnerability in the that particular firmware....
