Ok, first of all your iPod is just fine. What model iPod do you have? I was able to do my 8gb on my mac but others on XP. You can use Ziphone to kick it out and back to normal mode very easily. Hold power and home until it turns off, let go of power but keep holding home. Release home key after a couple secs and then repress it and hold again. It will go into the proper mode and then you can select NORMAL from the Mode pulldown menu and all will be well.

It will work it just takes a few tries. Do not worry it will be fine. If you just want to do a restore hold the power and home button unplug the ipod and plug it back in holding the home button.
