    Price: $1.99

    Version: 1.0

    iTunes Store link: iGangster

    Developer: Barry Kostjens

    [What is iGangster?]

iGangster is a MMO along the lines of iMob and Epic Pet Wars. Before you groan and say "Not another one of those!" you should consider the differences between iGangster and the rest of the MMOs. First of all, you do not add people's codes to improve your strength/mob/whatever (although you can add friends, they don't increase any stats or add to your gangster horde). Secondly, there is no option to purchase respect/points/whatever with real money, which means users with credit cards don't get an advantage anymore. Neither do code spammers.

Here's what you need to know to get started.

    • [ A ] Stamina. The first number is how many fights you have left and the second is how many fights you can have maximum. When not full, it regens every few minutes, up to the maximum.
      -
    • [ B ] Energy. Amount of energy/Amount of maximum energy. Energy is used to perform jobs.
      -
    • [ C ] HP. Life points/Maximum life points. You lose a bit of health per fight, and when you get lower than 20, you get sent to the hospital where no one can attack you, but you can't attack either. If you empty out from a massive attack, you can die, losing 25% of your current experience.
      -
    • [ D ] Fight. You can only fight people one level higher or below than you and the same level.. You gain exp whether you lose or win (get more if you win). People can attack you at anytime. There is a 5% chance of your opponent running away when you lose a fight.
      -
    • [ E ] Jobs. Perform jobs, expending energy, in return for cash and experience points. Some jobs require certain equipment.
      -
    • [ F ] Bank. Store your hard-earned cash in the bank for safe-keeping. Only $1000 or more can be stored. There is a 10% deposit fee.
      -
    • [ G ] Equip. Buy or Sell weapons and armor. Weapons/Armor give attack or defense. Some items may require upkeep costs.
      -
    • [ H ] Gang. Hire gangsters to join your gang. Each gangster increases your attack and defense by 5, they also gain 25% of your attack and defense skill points. You need to buy hangouts for your gangsters to stay. You can only have one hangout at a time. There are also special gangsters that increase other stats.
      -
    • [ I ] Property. Buy properties to increase your income. Income earns cash periodically.
      -
    • [ J ] Casino. Play minigames here. Features a blackjack game, roulette, and a lottery. You have a small chance to win a jackpot whenever you win any game (blackjack, roulette or lottery).
      -
    • [ K ] Stocks. Invest in stocks here. Stocks change every half hour, but not all stocks change at the same time. These times change according to if the companies go bankrupt and when investors re-invest in the company.
      -
    • [ L ] Ranking. These are your bragging rights. View highest levels, most gangsters, highest total incomes, most fights, most kills, and highest fights won percentage.
      -
    • [ M ] Doctor. Pay a doctor to get healed. The higher level and lower hp you are, the most expensive it will be.
      -
    • [ N ] Skills. Each level up you gain 5 skills to use in any of the following stats. Attack, Defense, Energy and Stamina (Increases by one for each skill point). Health increases by 5.
      -
    • [ O ] Friends. Add friends by their code. Friends do not influence fights or increase stats. They are just friends.
      -
    • [ P ] PM. Check messages friends may have left you. Compose messages too.
      -
    • [ Q ] News. Catch up on iGangster news. Comments are allowed.
      -
    • [ R ] Profile. Lists all your stats. Includes fights. Option to reset your account.
      -
    • [ S ] Home. Whenever you're doing something such as jobs or stocks, you can press that button to get back to the home screen.

Unlike some other some similar MMO games, you do not have a set path upon registering. You are free to do whatever you may like, which without any money initially, can only mean Fight or Jobs.

Jobs are scarce when you first start out, having only two options (one if you have no money). You gain cash and experience points for each job you do, in return for a set amount of energy. You unlock more jobs as you gain levels. Some jobs may require certain items or set number of gangsters.

The Casino is a unique feature of iGangster, buy chips and play games. Unless you're very good at blackjack, or very lucky, you will most likely lose. The better cash making alternative is Stocks. Stocks decrease the risks (although there are still quite a big risk involved) in making cash. Generally, buying when stocks are low is a good investment, although you run the chance of the company going bankrupt.

    Cha-ching!

In fights, your stats, weapons and gangsters determine whether you win or lose. A calculation takes place so you might not always win against someone even if you have better stats. You can kill someone by depleting all their hp, it's hard to do this since at 20HP they are sent to the hospital, you must attack them for greater than 20 damage. You gain an extra 20 experience points and more of his money. Of course, if someone else kills you, you lose 25% of your experience and lose money. You can only attack people one level higher or lower and the same level.

    I need to stop losing!

For protection you can hire gangsters, normal ones are $35,000 with an upkeep of $1,250. Normal gangsters increase your attack and defense by 5. Buy hangouts for your gangsters to stay and buy bigger ones to house more gangsters. There are special gangsters, for example, Fight Master which costs $75,000 and gives you an extra 15 attack points in fights.

Upkeep is the amount of cash that will periodically be deducted. Purchase properties in the Property tab to offset upkeep with steady income.

Just like on your iDevice home screen/springboard, you get badges that alert you of various things.

    [Presentation/Graphics]

I like the organization of the home screen, it's simple and direct. You can get to virtually anywhere in just a few taps. There is also the home button to exit back to the home screen.

The top bar is neat and displays everything you need to know, which the bottom bar displays the amount of exp needed for that next level.

One thing I was disappointed in was the lack of graphics to accompany the weapons, gangsters, properties, etc. Although there are graphics for blackjack and a very helpful graph for stocks.

    [Extra Info]

    [Audio]

    N/A

    No audio in this game.

    [Replay Value]

Like the other text-based MMO games, iGangster is designed to keep you coming back again and again. And it works. You can only do so much as your energy and stamina dictate number of actions. However, stocks and casino can be played whenever, furthering the game's value.

    [Final Thoughts]

I am pleased with this game. For one, the developer did not sell out and become a code-hoarding MMO or sell points. I hope this game will set a path for other developers of similar games to refrain from a code-spammer mentality.

There is the question of cost. Most MMOs like iGangster are free. This game is $1.99. Personally, to be able to play in these kinds of games fairly (without other players beating you easily with the weight of their wallet) and without having to scour the internet, or this site's section, for codes to increase your mob size is well worth the money.

    [Ratings]

Gameplay/Controls: 7/10 - A step above from similar games, because of stocks and casino, not to mention unique gangsters.

Presentation/Graphics: 8/10 - Graphics are meh. Not much. Presentation on the other hand, very good. Everything is orderly and neat. Plus there are badges to tell you when you have a PM, or someone fought you, etc. Excellent presentation, average graphics.

Audio: N/A - No audio in iGangster.

Replay Value: 8/10 - Pretty addictive. Worth a few minutes of your time a few times a day.

Value for the Money: 7/10 - It's a trade-off really. $1.99 for fair gameplay (plus several nice features).

Reviewers License: Add 2 points (from the addition of all the ratings) - The concept in itself is nothing new, a text-based MMO. But it breaks out from the code-hoarding aspect and the general selling out. Love to see more games like this.

Overall: 8.0/10 - "Great". Highly recommended for those addicted to similar games.

I am addicted. Do you think it will have things where you can buy more stuff in appstore like Mafia live, iMob etc? That would be sick I want to be able to buy more money.

Nope. It's super fair for all. No points for real cash.
