admittedly this requires an extra bit of hardware, but nonetheless it would be awesome. Right, here goes:

Lying in bed, I really wanted to switch my light off. But that would mean getting up... How cool would it be to switch your light off with your iPod?

What I'm thinking is, an app that would send out a simple signal which would turn the light on or off. The app itself would be a ten minute job, probably, but if anyone has any ideas how to mod the lightswitch, that would be awesome. I'm not knowledgable in that area. Can you get wifi activated switches?

Please someone reply, as I would gladly take part in making the UI for the app (the only bit I'm good at!) and the mechanics of the lightswitch.

    It would be AWESOME though!

    Thank you!

    Jonathan

this would be hard because youd have to somehow rig it so that its electronicly turned on and off
while still able to be turned on and off physically
but still its a great idea i just think it will take a lot of effort to make and use

Thing with this idea, is that the hardware for the switch would cost quite a bit, because you would need the switch, and WiFi hardware, whereas the ones on the market at the moment use a RF link which is about 1/10 the price.

you could theoretically have two light switches, one for the iPod and one for your self. We have two switched in the hall, just seperated. Could you give us a link on YouTube, or at least something to search for?

@simonrichards150: but that wouldn't be half as cool!

I'm willing to fork out a bit, just to do something original I guess. I haven't really done much hardware nodding before, so it would be fun as well!

But I warn you, programming microcontrollers to use WiFi is not easy

. Oh, and I wouldn't make anything for mains voltage unless you are SURE you know what you are doing

EDIT: Btw in that video it still uses RF
