I have an ipod touch 32 gig 3rd generation. It shipped with 3.1.2 and was upgraded to 3.1.3 before I used spirit when it came out to tide me over till I0S4.

All of the articles said that jailbreaks were not permanent and it was no problem to restore back. I went to restore in itunes and I got a message that
this device isn't eligible for the request build. I have not upgraded itunes to 9.2 if that makes a difference.

Someone told me to hold shift down when clicking restore - that does nothing.

    So what do I do?

I just want to make it like I bought it so that I can put the new Ipod OS on it?

    Thanks!

One more question - if I upgrade to 9.2 and then go to download the new IOS4 will that completely do away with my jailbreak - or will that make things worse?

Please help. I was under the impression from everyone that it was as easy as clicking restore to undo this, and now. . . well you know

You need 9.2 to go to 4.0.

I've read that if you download 9.2 with a spirit jailbreak it puts it in a reboot loop. True?

Guys, I could care less about the jailbreak anymore, I don't care about any data on the ipod.

So let me get this straight:

    I'm on a mac.
Download 9.2 (if you guys say that it is safe)
    Install
    Hook up ipod
    click on OS 4.0 install

    - what then?

Will it wipe my ipod fresh? I just want to set it up as a new ipod like when you bought it.

Put it in DFU mode and restore to 4.0. That'll probably do the trick.

I guess I'm just lost. I know what dfu mode is but I'm clueless about how putting it into DFU mode will restore to something I don't have?

    Thanks

Download it first. When iTunes asks you if you want to update to 4.0, click Download only.

So I'm correct in understanding that a operating system upgrade wipes everything? (never did this b4 thanks)

    1st Step. Download iTunes 9.2

    2nd Step. Click Restore

3rd Step. (if you get the error then your pretty much f***ed) It will DL iOS 4.

4th Step. Jailbreak it and get Multitasking and other stuff.
