    Reboot

    Have you tried rebooting.

If not, hold the home and power button for about 10 seconds.
The apple logo will show up and will ask to slide to unlock.

If that doesn't work, try restoring.

    Connect to iTunes
    Click on your device
Click restore(iTunes will backup all the data on your itouch, so don't worry)
Then things will most likely be back to normal.

    Hope that helped you out.

If none of this helps, or you don't feel like restoring, then send me more information about
    -The iTouch Generation
    -The iTouch firmware version

After that I can give you more direction on other things that you can do.

Does your son know what he did to put it in that state?

Edit : Im not saying he did it on purpose, but if he can remember what happened, it might help to solve the issue.

Yea, and if he says "I didn't do anything!" tell him
-"I'm not going to hit you or punish you in any way, JUST TELL ME WHAT YOU DID!!!"
