    Whatever you want to do.
Check out the firmware comparison for a little comparison, but the only really new thing on the newer firmwares is Google Maps Street View, Emoji, and bug fixes. It's a bit more stable now too.

I always upgrade a few days after the firmware is released though.

Eh, you might as well. I don't really know what the advantages are, but there are no disadvantages.

If you take a backup, you will only loose the stuff from the Jailbreak.

aptbackup helped me jump from 2.1 to 2.2.1. It doesn't save configurations or any JB-app data, but it creates a list so it can re-download every JB app you had. I manually backed up configurations, but this is a fairly advanced task.

I do think that updating to 2.2.1 is worth it. There are a couple dozen apps that are compatible only on the higher software version. Also, for me, 2.2 was noticeably faster and less buggy than 2.1. I'd go for it, especially if you make a backup or something.

the advantages are that you can use more apps. some of the apps only run on 2.2.x, so, backup with aptbackup (from cydia), then backup in itunes, then upgrade, rejalbrake, reinstall aptbackup, and restore jalbroken data! i use that alot cuz i hace a bad habit of destroying files that shouldnt be destroyed.

at this point i would just wait for 3.0 if i was you, there isnt much difference from 2.1 to 2.2.1
