    can you force restore?
did you use ziphone, iliberty or ipwner?
did you try to reboot twice?
did you get the spinning wheel of death?
    DO YOU HAVE SUMMERBOARD INSTALLED??!
I know there are a lot of questins but if you give us more information, we can help you fix it without restoring.

    Try a force reboot.

Hold down the home and sleep (top) button until the screen turns black, and then wait for it to restart. Try the app again. If it still doesn't work, attempt an uninstall with Installer or SSH and delete the app. It will be in /Applications

btw the above poster is right, you need Summerboard installed and active for it to work.

BEFORE YOU RESORT TO RESTORING READ THIS
Whenever this happened to me I would either restart the springboard, or reboot the iPod and it fixed that problem in no time...

A restore doesn't sound like it is necessary at the moment, so just post back if a reboot doesn't work.

Don't jump the gun and go ahead restoring your Touch just yet.

deleting the app wouldn't achieve much. SMB is the problem. it sometimes causes the springboard to creash [edit: crash... My iPod!!] continuously (SWoD)
describe what you see when you lock the screen and when you try to unlock it
do you have BSD subsystem installed and changed your password? it's a deadly combination (at least some say so)

The spinning wheel of death can be remedied by deleting the app, replacing the N45AP.plist file, etc. All this if SSH is available if not, then you need a program that does not require wifi, Total Commander, iPhone PC Suite, etc.

The OP said the wallpaper was shown.

If BSD Subsystem was installed, he couldn't install the app in the first place, for a notice would be displayed.
