You need to put it in DFU mode for it to be successfully recognised by iboot.
    (Right?)

hey guys im having a problem with redtool .98 and id appreciate it if someone could help me. i am using xp home prof. 2002 and i have the correct .NET framework. i also have libusb installed. I have the two firmwares on a disc. So i opened redtool .98 and pressed Jailbreak my Ipod. I selected the 2 firmwares off the disc and pressed install cydia and install installer. then i pressed create ipsw. A command prompt pops up for about a second then closes. And Redtool keeps running for more than 5 minutes until i give up

can someone help me out ive tried redtool .98 and .99

Well, I don't know if this will work or not, but its worth a shot. Plug it onto the computer, then press and hold the power and home buttons for 30 seconds, then see if your computer pics it up or if it starts to boot.
