They said this from the get go and everyone seemed to ignorantly ignore it. They only killed the hardware production not the OS itself. My favorite was an article talking about how stupid we all were for buying a device that would get no updates and how to get rid of it.

    Winning!

It would not surprise me if the whole "were ditching webOS" was just a money making scheme, it makes sense if you think about it.

HP announce webOS is to be abandoned
The prices drop to ridiculously low figures on all webOS TouchPads
This generates loads of interest across the internet
Fire sale commences selling out all stock of the TouchPad
HP produces more stock, whacks the price back up
Announces that because of the amount of profit it made from the sale of all the TouchPads it can afford to keep the webOS alive
All the while, the TouchPad got more attention for the last few weeks than any other tablet

    HP are smart.

I'll try again? From the get go they never stated they were ditching WebOS. Only the hardware....

That's what he meant about HP abandoning it.

Even then, HP will inevitably kill support for webOS as their will be no incentive to pump money into dead hardware.

Still not following...HP is keeping WebOS. They are leasing it to new hardware manufacturers. They are releasing it on different devices (cars, printers, TVs, etc). They are not "dumping WebOs" just are not personally making products that run it.

It would be like if Microsoft made computers and then stopped. You will still get windows updates and you can still buy windows computers just not ones from Microsoft. People seem to think that if the hardware is gone from one manufacturer then the OS is dead.

HP has stated multiple times they are continuing development of WebOS. They will still make money off the App store whether it is a HP Touchpad or (insert company name) Touchpad.

An HP spokesperson got back to us today and added:

It's consistent with what we have been saying. While we are discontinuing the development of webOS-based devices, we are continuing to enhance the software platform. This includes OTA updates and growing applications. We have seen record activations and downloads of apps recently.

This is great news! I just got order conformation from HP SMB from an order placed last Saturday. Hopefully it ships soon... I can't wait for my touchpad!
