Alright, I have already looked through the archives in regards to this matter, but can't seem to find 1 solid answer.

I just opened up this 8GB iPod Touch 2G 2.1.2 that I got from last year's Back-to-School promo.

Considering how everybody and their mother here has 3.0 firmware or above, how do I go about upgrading to 3.0 or above?

    Some things in my circumstances:

    - I am running iTunes 9.1.1 (the latest update)
    - I am using a Mac
    - On the iPod screen, it says Update here with 3.1.3 firmware.
    - If I update this iPod Touch to 3.1.3, is there any working, untethered jailbreak?

Thanks a lot, and excuse my noobness
. I just literally opened this iPod Touch this morning, after it has been sitting in my closet for almost a year.

Yes, update your iPod via iTunes, then use Spirit to jailbreak. But you must know, 4.0 comes out in 4 days(there is a jailbreak for it, but its unstable). So you can update to 3.1.3, and wait until 4.0 comes out(and jailbreak then if you want, yes its untethered for your device). Or you can update to 3.1.3, and jailbreak with Spirit.

You could download the 3.1.2 firmware (http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/).

Then go to iTunes, Click Restore while holding down shift, then it will ask you to locate the firmware you want to restore to and click the 3.1.2 that you downloaded from the link.

    Then jailbreak with blackra1n.

Upgrade later when theres a stable jailbreak

    ^ Thanks a lot.

Is there any major difference between 3.1.2 and 3.1.3., in regards to jailbreaking (certain games can only be played, etc. etc.)?

I just hear that 3.1.3. is easy to jailbreak, simply because Spirit is so easy-to-use.

I would wait, there actually is a jailbreak for 4.0 already, just not too stable. But it wont take long to fix

There really are no visible differences between 3.1.2 and 3.1.3

Blackra1n and Spirit work the same, one click and done. See my Spirit link in my signature.

    ^ Thanks for the help.

I just have a question: 4.0 will work on iPod Touch 2G?

I thought it will only work for iPhones.

Yes, it will work on iPod Touch 2G but some features like multitasking and homescreen wallpapers wont be there. But there is a way to activate them if you jailbreak. =p

    ^ Sweet.

I guess I'll just wait like everybody else until 4.0 and its jailbreak officially release.
