This is a guide for accessing your iPod Touch or iPhone without a router. Might be practical for people who have a PC or laptop in their living room and the router in the basement or far, far away from your PC or laptop(=you don't have a good Wi-Fi-Connection in your living room).

    What you need:
-A jailbroken iPod Touch or iPhone(not tested)
-"Open SSH" on your iPod Touch/iPhone (usually it comes by jailbreaking your ipod Touch or iPhone with ZiPhone. So it should be visible in your Installer!))
-Windows XP(might work in Vista, too(not tested!))
-A W-LAN-Card in your PC or laptop
-Wi-Fi must be switched on your iPod Touch/iPhone to "ON"

    What you have to do:
    1) Create a peer-to-peer wireless network on your laptop

    2) Connect your iPod Touch/iPhone to this new network

    3) Access your iPod Touch/iPhone by using FileZilla

What you have to do(in detail):

    1)
    Click on "Control Panel">"Network Connections".
Then double click on your wireless network and select "Properties".
Go to "Wireless Networks" and then click "Add".
Set the network name to "SSH" or any other network name, that might be suitable for this network.
    Set data encryption to "disabled".
Check the checkbox at the end ("This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network; wireless access points are not used") and click "OK".
Now click "OK" on the following dialog and on any other open Wireless Network Connection windows.

(Your wireless network will appear to be disconnected. This is normal!)

    2)

On your iPod Touch/iPhone, go to "Settings>Wi-Fi".

(You should see a new network called "SSH".
This is the network you just set up on your PC or laptop.)

    Tap on "SSH" to connect.

Now that you've connected to the touchpad network using your iPod Touch/iPhone, the wireless icon on your PC or laptop should start animating.

    3)

Open FileZilla and connect to your iPod Touch/iPhone with the following access-data:

Server: "IP Address" of your iPod Touch/iPhone(you can get it by clicking on the blueb button at "Settings>Wi-Fi>"SSH"" (on your iPod Touch/iPhone, NOT on your PC or laptop!)

    Username: root

    Password: alpine

    Port: 22

This is also very easy on Macs.

    1. Click on Airport icon in the menu bar and select 'Create Network'.
    2. Enter a name for your network, and optionally create a password.
    3. From your iPod, join the network you've created.
    4. Go to iPod settings and find your iPod IP.
    5. You can now connect to your iPod via sFTP, Terminal, etc.

You should also be able to share the internet connection on your Mac with your iPod (configured in System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet Sharing, but I can't get it to work right.

    Check, if:

-...your iPod Touch isn't in HOLD-mode or something like that. The screen must be on.
-...your firewall doesn't block port 22(try to deactivate it for a short time?)

Installer has been DISCONTINUED. Which means you cannot longer download it. It doesn't support 3.x. Now the only "app" installers are Cydia and Rock. Rock is faster but unstable compared to Cydia. Cydia is stable but a little slow. Also they both need WiFi to work
