    FOR iOS 4
SOME STEPS ARE FOR JAILBROKEN DEVICES ONLY
I THINK YOU DON'T NEED TO REMOVE SHADOWS WHEN HOMESCREEN WALLPAPER IS DISABLED. BECAUSE IT'S ALL BLACK IF IT IS NOT ENABLED.

    First
Go to settings>general>spotlight search and disable everything so that the system will not index the data on the OS

    Second
Use SSH or iFile to delete the ff in System/library/core services/springboard.app

This will remove the shadows on your springboard for no lag

    Third
Do two hard resets!! Sleep/wake + home button
This will do something.. I don't really know how it works.. I think it frees up the memory used..

    Fourth
Download memory sweep or Free Memory in the apps store so that you can free your device's memory

That's my tutorial to speed up iOS 4 on 3G or iPod 2G

That should speed up your device by 50%... Maybe...
It sped up my device by 50%!!!

Tell me if it made improvements
    On your device down there

Ok. I'll try. But I'm not getting those Cydia apps. I once got one of those registry cleaners for an older PC and it was destroyed.

    But I'll try the rest.

Also, make sure to not install any extra tweeks that just look cool but run in the background, such as that notification thing in cydia that puts the icons in your status bar. Be careful with what you install in cydia. It slowd down my iPhone 3G. Use SBSettings to clear ram every once in a while and close out any backgrounding apps if backgrounding is activated.

Just a couple more quick tips, nice guide

Really all I've done is install Cydia. Don't know why though, I don't use it.

I also enabled multitasking, but somehow it makes things seem faster at loading... And it doesn't lag everything up unless like nine apps are open..

I believe so. Like the shadows in the dock, or when you drag icons over one-another... In folders, etc...

Cydia has a lot of nice things in it. Add some sources and look through packages. You will find a lot in it. Just be careful to not have too much installed that eats up ram.

It makes things faster because it's in the background. It lags depending on what you have in the background. For me when cydia is open it will lag a little bit but I have some cydia tweaks that use some ram so thats why.

I know what Cydia is for... Ha....

    I was big on hacking/modding with 3.0.

Now I don't use it. I was acting confused up above because, I don't know why I even installed it.... I don't use it anymore.
