I would like to secure my web surfing on the ipod touch when I'm on a public network. I have ssh setup on a home server. I'm able to setup ssh tunnel with putty + firefox to do it on my windows machine, but I don't know how to do it on the ipod touch with safari. Anyone have any ideas?

I have ssh running. I just can't figure out how to make safari surf over the tunnel. I enter the proxy setting as 127.0.0.1 and the port I have tunneled, but its not working.

Tunneling is used to map port between local host and remote host. So you access local host specific port is equivalent to accessing mapped remote host specific port or vice versa. If you have both proxy server and ssh server running on your remote host, you can tunnel to the proxy through ssh to surf the web.
