I use Wi-Fi a lot when i'm out, but the lack of security stops me from doing stuff like checking e-mail or skype. If I set up a VPN, will that prevent snoops from getting my data?

And if so, how can I set one up for little or no cost? I have a spare linux box on my home network that can run something like this.

hotspotshield.com is a free VPN but has some limits. witopia.net PPTP VPN is $40 a year. I don't know about Skype but Truphone, Fring, and Nimbuzz do not support a VPN. Fring claims that all of their data is encrypted, including the login process. Google "Setting up a VPN server" for how to set up your own VPN server.

hotspotshield VPN is what I use. It is easy to set up and use. When using it on your computer, a banner ad is added to every page you visit. (When you turn off the VPN connection the ads disappear.)
