I have an Apple iphone 3G with firmware 3.1.2. I was wondering if there was a hack to allow me to use the text messaging application on the iphone already but send the messages over the internet so I would not be charged by ATT. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not to be rude, but how do you think the iPhone sends those messages in the first place?
It HAS to go through AT&T (unless you hactivated it on T-Mobile).

You can sign up for Google Voice and use that.
After signing up, go to google.com/voice.
Add it to your home screen.

Even better, buy TextNow after making a Google Voice account.
It looks just like the iPhone's SMS application and works nicely.

If you want to send a MMS you can just email the file to the phone.

I just want something so that ppl sending texts to me can still use my cell number instead of something other number that get assigned to you from those texting applications. It just makes it easier. I just thought that maybe there was a hack to trick the texting application that apple has already and have it go over the internet or wifi instead of thru the att servers.

Nope, you can't use your iPod and have it show your cell number when you text people.

However, you can get a real phone number if you link TextNow with Google Voice.
Not some silly email address that keeps changing.

If you're texting other iPhone users, there's an app, WhatsApp, that is like a Text/SMS/Chat all in one. It has push notifications so it will show up like a text when you receive a new one. My wife and I use this exclusively to text each other since we're not on an unlimited texting plan.

I do not have an ipod touch its actually the apple 3g iphone. SO there is no such hack for the iphone that would do this?
