Only the 32 gb and 64 gb are 3g, not sure if they are mc models though.

    If it's a 8GB 3G, it counts as 2nd gen.

The 3g has two lines of text on the back (8gb as well) while the 2nd gen has 3 lines.

Settings > General > About, and check the model number. If it begins with MC, then it's a 3G. Though like Psyko said, if it's an 8gb MC model, then it has 2G hardware.

Doesn't the 3g come with microphone on the headphones. Thats assuming you are buying a new sealed box of course.

no! the only way to know if its a 3g for sure, is using the voice memo without headphones.

If you have access to the net, go to Apple support and enter the serial #. That will give you the info you want.
