So I had this issue... thought i'd share in its own topic to help.

This is if you upgraded to the 3.1.1 firmware and thus is not jailbroken.
You are fine to have iTunes 9.

    1. Backup. A-duh!

    2. Get hold of the 3.0 firmware.

    3. Get into DFU mode

    4. Restore to the 3.0 firmware on your iPod.

    5. Once that is on, just select as a new iPod.. Don't bother any syncing.

    6. Get QuickPWN (Mac or Windows) and create a custom 3.0 Firmware.

    7. Restore the 3.0 firmware you just made, thus jailbreaking.
If you get the WAITING FOR REBOOT hang... Just unplug the cable then plug it straight back in. You don't need to stop or cancel.

    8. Using PwnageTool (or whatever), Create a custom 3.1.1 firmware package, using the backup you made of your 3.1.1 firmware in step 1.
What I did, is used Expert Mode on Pwnage Tool. Selected the first option and unticked ICY and the custom boot logos.. then build.

    9. Restore 3.1.1 Custom firmware in Recovery mode

    You should now be jailbroken.

Kinda takes a while... and a bit annoying to do... But its the way its gotta be done

QuickPwn's function is to create a custom firmware that you then restore onto your device through iTunes... this guide assumes you have already got hold of a custom firmware suitable for your device (presumably by asking a friend with a Mac to make one for your device).

Well , I dont think this method will work with OTB 3.1.1 iPod touches.... Since they are half 3G! I am talking about 8GB ones...

i have a 2g with 3.0 jb on it, should i go ahead and jailbreak 3.1 this way? or would it be better to wait for a simple one click type program, there seem to be enough people working on them at the moment,
is there any benefit to Jailbreaking a specific way?
    ------------------double post merged------------------
actually i just thought of a benifit,
won't the new JB programs keep us from losing all our stuff when we JB?

If i were you i would just wait! too much hassle if you want 3.1 jaibroken at the moment.. like make custom firmware and restore and all that stuff! just wait for a simple tool! my opinion!
