So Safari seems to downscale images that you download, and iCab Mobile and Downloads seem to work the same way. I've also read that Dropbox works similarly. So how can I get retina images (2048x2048 to be used as wallpapers, for example) onto my retina iPad? I don't want to rely on iTunes since it never remembers that I synced my iPad.

And is there any way to check image resolution on the iPad? Some app or something?

    Thanks!

PhotoManager Pro is great for organizing, importing, exporting, and viewing the size and resolution of pictures, all while being able to keep them under a passcode if needed.

Also, if you want some high-res pics, download them from your computer and transfer them via a USB stick or SD card using the iPad Camera Connection Kit.

There are some wallpaper sites that have had threads created here that have 2048x2048 pictures and they downloaded and look perfect to me.

There is a wallpaper site http://www.ilikewallpaper.com/The-new-iPad that has images (wallpapers) for the new iPad, (that has been posted here). I've gone to that site and downloaded wallpapers to my iPad, by means of Safari. I've then docked my new iPad to my Win7 64 bit computer and downloaded the images to it from my new iPad. When I click on those images, in Win 7 they are reported as being 2048 x 2048. That suggest to me there is NOT an issue. What test have you actually run to suggest that there is, if any?

Okay so I have used the site Dav1d has provided to do a test seeing if Safari actually downsizes image downloads (as opposed to my theory that Safari doesn't downscale but just shows a 1024x1024 pixel size on the tab at the top of your screen).

So I downloaded an image from the site on iOS Safari (I have the new iPad running 5.1) and the picture popped up as only being 1024x1024 on the Safari tab. I saved the image to Photos and it looked amazing still. I then went on a computer and downloaded the same image and it was shown on Windows 7 as being 2048x2048. I synced that image to my iPad.

I then imported both photos from Photos on my iPad to the PhotoManagerPro app. Both images popped up as being the same file size, which was about 5.7mb.

So Safari downloads the full image, it might just not say the correct resolution when downloaded.

You can download them on your computer then email them to your iPad

This site has a ton of pictures that are optimized for the new iPad. Just choose the resolution "Apple:iPad 3 2048x1536" when downloading.

That also. OnLive Desktop allows me to do that all straight from my iPad. I love having a full W7 Desktop and full-flash Internet Explorer on my iPad :D

    Problem solved!

I downloaded that same exact picture and it showed 2048x2048.

Then I went to download another to see if some aren't actually 2048x2048.

This one was 1024x1024 from the first page of wallpapers for the new iPad on that site. Go download it and you should see this resolution:
