I've seen a member here who has 6,xxx songs on their iPod which is 16GB and holds according to Apple 3,500 songs. Is there a way to compress songs to increase the amount you can store? Or is lowering the bit rate the only way?

use programs like mp3gain or lame to make the song smaller and decrease it quality
it has crappier quality but the size is smaller

If decreasing quality is the only way nvm. I just wanted to know if there was a way to compress the file further without losing audio quality.

encode all your songs in mono at 22khz 48kbps you will it an ass tone of songs. quality will suck but you will probably have 6-10k songs on an 8g pretty easy. I have a 16G touch2g and I usually take up about 4-8G of space with songs, and only listen to about half of them before I end up changing around the loaded selection. Most of my stuff is encoded at 44khz 192kbps oir 256kbps (since apple refuses to support flac and VLC n the touch leaves a lot to be desired).

go to itunes>select all>right-click>create AAC version, roughly same quality but smaller size
