    You can find how to do this also on http://www.hotspotshield.com/clientless/iphone/
    STEP 1:

    Make sure that Wi-Fi is marked "OFF" in
    Settings -> Wi-Fi

    Then find the VPN settings in
    Settings -> General -> Network -> VPN -> Add VPN Configuration:

    * Select the L2TP tab/pane
    * Description: HotspotShield
    * Server: 64.55.144.10
    * Account: btbnp0
    * RSA SecurID: OFF
    * Password: btbnp0
    * Secret: password
    * Send all traffic: ON

    STEP 2: Get Account ID
    Go to http://www.hotspotshield.com/clientless/iphone/index.php

    STEP 3:
    You are now done. Save the settings and hit the "HOME" button to quit. Make sure to turn Wi-Fi back "ON".

    STEP 4:
    To activate Hotspot Shield on your iPhone, the VPN setting needs to be turned on. From "HOME" menu, go to Settings and click the "On" tab for VPN. Your Status will change to "CONNECTED" and the VPN icon will appear on top in the iPhone Tray when complete. If you cannot connect to the VPN immediately, power down your iPhone, turn it back on, and turn the VPN to "ON".

    If you cannot connect to VPN immediately, power down your iPhone, turn it back on, and turn VPN to "ON" in "Settings".

    HotSpotShield will help to give you privacy and anonymity online. When running, it slows down your internet. Also, it ads a banner ad to the top of every webpage when you use it on a computer. (The ads are removed when you turn hotspotshield off.)

    I agree

    Well, technically, it will protect you, but I personally find VPN's uneccesary

    Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead.

    If you don't have anything worth sharing, then it doesn't matter. If you have anything you don't want others to see, then don't do those things on a public unprotected network without a VPN. If you do, you risk sharing that information with anyone who is watching. Just because someone hasn't had any problems on an unprotected public network, doesn't mean it can't happen. In fact, it has happened to some. Even if they get your information, it doesn't mean they will use it right away. Someday, somewhere, when you least expect it, someone will be watching.

    You can expect it to happen in the future.
