Ok, you create a .PNG file 20 pixels high and however long you want... i recommend between 58-100... pixels per square inch should be 160...

then go into your springboard.app folder and scroll down until you see the picture file labeled "FSO_CARRIER_IPOD.png"

rename your file (or the one you saved) that you want instead of the ipod icon with the same name "FSO_CARRIER_IPOD.png"

Copy to replace the current file and hit YES TO ALL when it asks if you want to replace the current file...

REBOOT YOUR IPOD AND IT SHOULD APPEAR THERE INSTEAD!

Sweet thanks! Looks like there are tons of things we can edit there. The problem was I was browsing on the iPod with Finder instead of Squid. Squid let me get there. I also noticed the battery icon has multiple frames to show the current charge. I wonder if that is a way to get animated things on the pod. Some kind of script running in a loop that swaps out background images, icons or whatever. What I would like to recreate is the 3d mailbox that ran on the SGI systems. When you got mail it would animate the box opening and the flag would raise.

people need to search before posting questions
most of the stuff i'm looking for, i can easily find with a search or two.
