I just want to replace some of the default icons. Is that possible?

Where is it located? (I mean the default icons folder)

in /private/var/stash/Applications.xxxxxx/(app) and replace the "icon.png" with the picture you want but you need to name that picture "icon.png". make a back up of the original.

I did that but it didn't work. The icons still remain unchanged. What should I do?

Make sure the name is exactly as it should be.
And do not name the pic icon.png. You do NOT need the ".png" part, as it already gets it when it's saved.

Well try taking off "Hide extension for known file types". Then rename the last part ".png" to ".PNG" without the quotes obviously.
