Hi, I am new to this site and this is my first post.

So I found an ad from someone on the internet and she is selling an 8gb iPod Touch. She claims it's a third generation but how can I be sure it is? I have searched on the apple website that you can check the back of the iPod. Something about how the 3rd generation has 3 lines of text on the back of the iPod compared to the 2nd generation which has 4 or more lines.

Now this could have been a neat way to check, but the thing is that she is selling them new and sealed. I have searched here on this site and found something about checking the model number, and if it starts with an MC, then it should be a 3rd generation. And also to see if it has a voice memo feature.

Another question, if the 3rd gen iPod is restored to its factory settings, will it have the 3.0 or higher operating system?

Are there any more tips to make sure I am not getting scammed?

(sorry if these questions have already been answered)

    Thank you.

Go into settings>general>about>model if it starts with an MC it a 3rd gen.

Did the iPod come with 3.1.1 or 3.2? If it did it's a 3gen.

8gb 3gen is the same as the 2gen. So no worry. And why can't you just buy it at Best Buy?

I lost mine which was a gift, and I would really break the bank if I buy it full price.

The differences between 2g and 3g might be slim but at least I'll know that the seller is not reliable.

Doesn't the 3rd gens case have the "Voice Memos" icon on the front, whereas the 2nd gen did not? I may be wrong, but that's what I thought!

3rd gens are only $184 on amazon anyway, and that way you would know it was legit, and have protection if not.

    Edit: amazon link.

That's a $24 difference. If you buy it at Amazon you get free shipping. Just buy it off Amazon. Less headaches.
