For a 9.7" screen to have around 2000x1500 pixels is insane. My computer has about half of that and it looks just fine. Something just does not add up here. Not even 55" televisions have that many pixels in them. A screen that dense must cost a fortune. I think apple is going to just bump the resolution making it around 200ppi
If this is it. http://www.truesupplier.com/oem-apple-ipad-3-lcd-screen-display-replacement-pr-29884.html then it'll only cost $122. The iPad 2 LCD costs $56. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Brand-New-LC...ltDomain_2&hash=item3f141e48bf#ht_2205wt_1396
It really makes sense if it was doubled up to 2048x1536 or whatnot, as developers won't need to update anything in their apps except for images/graphics. If it went from 1024x768 to 1280x1024, apps won't scale well at all. My 2ยข.
If the resolution was that high, I could only think of one manufacturer that could put that many pixels into one screen, and it's not LG (they can do it with the iPhone, but not with the iPad, that's just way to many pixels). Looks like if the screen is that size, Samsung has the screen building, which is awesome, as they already have 25% of every iOS device. xD But in reality, I wouldn't like a resolution that high, it would make everything way too small, I mean, my crappy laptop has a 1280x720 screen, and it looks just fine.
If it was doubled that means the app sizes would be huge! I already have RAGE HD which weighs in at 2GB. Having images that large would eat up all the space. Not to mention 1080p would look kinda fuzzy stretched across 1536 pixels
I just feel that Retina Display on an iPad is a bit unnecessary. I have 20/20 vision, and I find it hard to distinguish the pixels of an iPad 2 from normal viewing distances. All I'm saying is that Apple will spend lots of time and money on something that people don't need. I think that if Apple bumped it up to 200 ppi or so, it'd look better, but not unnecessary.
iPad 2 screen will look like crap compared to a iPad 3 retina display, just like iPod 2-3g's look like crap next to a 4g. Anything really higher than retina is overkill, but retina itself is the final step in visual display fidelity.
