I'm finally in a position to buy myself an Ipod Touch but I'm torn between a 16Gb 2G and a 32Gb 3G. I'm just finding it hard to justify $400AU on an mp3 player. I don't really NEED the 32 gig, i have a 30 gig Creative Zen at the moment and I find that I don't really need it all so the size isn't really the issue. What I mainly want to know is, just how much faster is the 3G? I'm not hugely interested in the "fancier" 3d games like Need For Speed or shooters, I'll mainly be playing puzzle games on it as they are much more interesting in the long term I think.

So, my question to you is, keeping in mind that I don't need the size and not that interested in GFX intensive games: How much better is the 3G over the 2G?

I've only ever used a Iphone 3GS so any comparisons to that would be helpful.

    Thanks.

    It's faster but you won't miss a 2G. It's basically the same.

    The difference:

    2G processor: 400MHz
    3G processor: 600Mhz

    2G RAM: 128MB
    3G RAM: 256MB

    3G supports better graphics

Yeah, the graphics card is basically twice what is in the 2G.

Its a nice update, really. If you ever use the speed, you'll be addicted to it.

The iPod 3G is noticeably faster than the iPhone 3Gs.

-iPod touch 3G: Has 256 RAM (makes almost EVERYTHING fast, because this is system memory, the more you have, the more you could multi-task/load up web pages faster.
The 3G also has good graphics, but I read you don't really care for it.

-It supports faster Internet connections I think E

-It has a built in FM transmitter, which is not unlocked (FOR NOW)

-Voice Control, much like the iPhone 3Gs

-I think the Speakers are Louder, but Choppier

-If Puzzle games you want, then Puzzle games you will get! (Approximately 5X faster than the 2G!)

Thanks a lot for all the responses.

Although, I've considered everything you've said and I've watched side by side videos on youtube and I just can't reconcile the $120 difference between the two.

My justification is that, while the 3G is appreciably faster in side by side comparisons, ultimately, having only tinkered with a friend's 3GS, I don't think I'll notice it all that much in real-world use. Also, It's going to be used, first-and-foremost, as an mp3 player and the fancier OpenGL 2.0 GFX and extra 200Mhz isn't going to make a huge amount of difference on that front.

The real kicker though is that I saw real racing being run side-by-side on a 2G and a 3G and they looked to perform EXACTLY the same, the 3G was a second or two faster at loading the game, but once in game, they were identical and considering I'll only be playing 'light' games on it, I don't think it's going to be much of a deciding factor.

Furthermore, I'm not going to use voice control or the FM transmitter (when it finally gets unlocked).

So, apologies if it seems like I've ignored all your advice, but this thread was more an attempt to get people to make great reasons to convince me, unfortunately, there just doesn't seem to be THAT huge a difference between the two, especially for my needs.

    Thanks.
