I've had my ipod touch for about 4 months now and its been great, but there is one problem. Even if I have the wifi turned off when I put it to sleep, the battery doesn't last for more than 24 hours. No music playing and on a full charge.

    Is this normal?

No. It should last a very, very long time. Restore in DFU mode and take it back to the Apple Store

Yea it does. If it's on, it has to be using some sort of battery life. Not that much though.

Well I restored it to back to the original firmware and will see how long it lasts when sleeping. Anyone know what the average amount of sleep time is?

If it still doesn't last longer than that when in sleep mode, get it replaced.

Turn off wifi and turn off "ask to join networks". Those still use battery when in sleep. Though I doubt its whats causing this problem.
