I mean seriously they are going to eventually find out people are getting the firmware without any payment. When they find 5a347 is being downloaded but there is more downloads than there is transactions being made they are going to suspect something is up. How are they going to react to this?

the sensible solution would be to roll out any future major enhancements in a controlled and robust manner.

i think they watch these forums and saw how people were complaining about the price so when they ran into this server problem they leaked a link so some of us could get it for free till they get there servers back up then all the other noobs will have to pay for it

nothing to worry about, I'd say. It was on their website, it was found, it was downloaded. No hacking was required, no passwords were cracked.

It was a simple update download. They just forgot to ask us to pay!

    Apple should have known better

Seriously how can they be surprised when there is no security around the ipod update file? You can download it direct from apple's website right now! And it installs on the ipod without any hacking etc!

Bottom line, Apple's mistake. We just benefit from it

They shouldn't react in a harsh matter at all, it is their own fault for not securing the firmware. They are the only ones to blame for people not buying 2.0.
