I thought it used IP addresses of wifi signals to figure out where I am, but wouldn't it need to be connected to the internet to figure out what the addresses of those wifi signals are? I can drive down the street WITHOUT being connected to the internet and although it is jumpy, it can follow me. Does it have some sort of database already loaded on the ipod touch that it refers to so that it can tell my location without being connected to the internet?

It triangulates it from wi-fi signal and hotspots near you.
    I think it uses SkyHook.

Allot of public wifi hot spots include geographic info these days which allows your touch to get an address or coordinates. If you watch your maps will show the location of your wifi connection and not your actual location.
