how do you tell if an ipod is 3g or 2g?

    i've looked around for ever and the only things i can find is crap like the firmware and the processors in 3g. what external features (or a surefire internal feature) can giveaway if an ipod touch is 2g or 3g? i dont know if it was bought prior to sept ninth.

    someone said something about the serial code on the back..?

    Look at the engravings below the engraving that tells you how large the iPod is. If the engravings are 2 or 3 lines its a 3g, if its 4 its a 2g.

    Best way for me was to download CopyTrans Control Centre and go into the "CopyTrans Manager (free)" , close itunes and on the top left of the manager it will have a scroll down bar showing ur version.

    Go into the iPod>Settings>General>About>Model> MC=3gen MB=2gen.

    Do all the above or let it see my hard-drive, its not floppy and has extra ram. if its interested in 'it' its a 3g
