on my old ipod touch 2G you could close down an app properly by holding down the home button for 5 seconds, however with the 3GS this brings up the voice control function, is there any way now to force-close an application?

    It's not the 3GS, it's the OS - 3.0

I'm unsure on how to do this.

I think 3.0 automatically cuts the process when you press the Home button.

    1. Hold the Power button until the Slide to Power Off appears.

    2. Release the Power button.

    3. Hold the Home button until you are taken back to the springboard.

I'm pretty sure with 3.0, on every device, this function was eliminated. It sucks especially when your not jailbroken(sbsettings;processes). The 3GS can handle the multitasking and you shouldn't worry. The only apps that actually stay open and don't close are the iPod app, mail, messages, and sometimes safari. No need to worry.

just wanted to check to see if it could be done, as sometimes apps crash and dont completely close (a game did once and it used up a hell of a lot of memory)

No, Apple has not gotten rid of it, they just changed it to accommodate Voice Control, and other reasons, I imagine.

To force quit an application in 3.0, press and hold the sleep/wake button until the slide to power off screen appears, then press and hold the home button until the application quits (about six seconds).

    so hellrider was correct......
