I've seen post to use ssh etc., but what i don't understand is, when things go bad on your Ipod, which files are important to backup.

u cant theoretically backup everything. itunes only backs up settings and app data (savegames, settings, etc.) when things go bad, just use an itunes backup. If you want to backup your cydia apps, use pkgbackup or appbackup. i prefer pkgbackup. they save all your cydia app's sources to a contact file, so itunes backs it up. that way you can restore your cydia apps to an ipod touch/iphone after you jailbreak.

First of all, backup to iTunes.
Then backup SHSH blobs. It's important.

That's pretty much it. Anything else you could probably re-download off the App Store/Cydia.

That backs up barely anything, you can locate themes and such through ssh but applications will probably have to be re-downloaded as they have multiple directories.
