I just bought an ipod touch at target today because there was a deal. How can I tell before opening it if it is 2G or 3G? They didn't know in the comotion today. Can you tell by the casing?

    Yes

Look at the back of the box. There should be something saying "Earphone with Mic" somewhere along those lines.

If it says that, then it's a 3G

No. The way to tell if you iPod is a 3rd gen is to look at the Serial number on your case, or iPod backing, or in Settings to see if it starts with an MC.

It's the part #/model # that begins with MC. Serial begins with 1B on mine.

If it is an 8GB model then it doesn't really matter whether it is a 2G or a 3G.

Yeah, the 8GB model is the same for the 2G and the 3G.

Except for the battery life that was lost. That still perplexes me btw
