Why wouldn't you be able to re-sync them...?

earlier it was telling me i would need to restore before it could communicate with it, but now its telling me to set it up as a new ipod or to restore from the backup. which option will restore my library and still allow me to restore my ipod if i want to later.

Neither has to do with your music library. Your music is no longer on your iPod. Those options are for settings, app data, etc. Choose to set up as a new iPod, you'll avoid potential problems.

Once that's taken care of, just re-sync your media.
