Just bought 2 Touches from Target and I want to make sure they are the latest and greatest and I have no idea ho to tell. Is there a serial number decoder on here someplace to tell me that I got the latest software version? I tried searching but my keywords may not be correct.

Is there any hardware differences between G1 and G2?...forgive me...I am new here and trying to learn as much as I can before Christmas when these are given to our daughters...but I just want to make sure we got the latest stuff out there.

I would assume Target is selling the latest but I hate to assume...

    Thanks in advance.
    Joe.

How do I tell if that is what I actually have?

Serial number? Model number? Part number?

I have not opened the packaging yet...as these are presents.

    Thanks!

You can check which iPod Touch is which by the clear plastic. The new iPod Touches come in a small clear plastic molded packaging with the iPod Touch itself clearly visible. The old 1G iPod Touches come in a box.

I have two very small clear plastic packages that you can see the touch inside of.

By your description...sounds like I have two 2G's. Now would S/W version 2.1.1 be the only version that 2G's came with or was there an early release and then an update?

The last 3 digits of both serial numbers is 201...does that tell you anything?

    Thanks for the replies.

    On your iPod Second Generations...

Go to the Settings App, then tap General and the "About" at the top.

And look down the screen til you find "Version" and it'll tell you there.

He bought them as a gift so he is not opening at least thats what he said in his earlier post. And NO the 2g doesnt come with any earlier firmware it comes with the latest and greatest so no need to update the firmware.

I was trying to avoid opening the packaging just in case it isn't the latest...

If it isn't...is this something that can be upgrade thru the USB port?

Again...I'm just trying to see if I in fact have the latest and greatest out there right now from the factory in the way of software version.

    Thanks!

    yes... 2gen = 2.1.1 no matter what

you can also check the warranty status by puttin the serial no. in the apple website..... it should be a year

the new ones come in a clear case unlike the old black case
