Put it into DFU mode and try it again

Remember make sure you kill the AppleMobileDevice.exe and IpodHelper.exe

    in Task Manager

No you don't need iTunes. Just make sure it really is in DFU mode.

If he doesn't have iTunes, then I'm pretty sure he doesn't have AppleMobileDevice.exe and/or iTunesHelper.exe.

Plus, those really do not matter when booting up, it just saves you from the annoyance of iTunes telling you that the iPod is in "recovery mode". It doesn't stop the boot process at all.

If it's in DFU mode, and surely in DFU mode, then the boot process should be simple enough to use one of the booters widely out there.

Are you sure that it is in DFU mode, and not just the black screen where it can't boot?

If you are getting a "device has malfunctioned" (or some sort of error like this) bubble on your PC, then you are not in DFU mode.

You are in the normal mode that just cannot boot any farther.

Both of these utilize black screens.
