There was a jailbreak, and we downloaded applications from Installer, Cydia, or via SSH.

    Jailbreaking and Installer.

It really was thanks to Installer and Jailbreaking, and Cydia etc. that Apple made the app store.

That's nonsense. Apple always had support built in for adding more apps via some kind of AppStore, as evidenced by SpringBoard's default paging behavior, introduced with 1.1.1. The AppStore would have come regardless.

Actually, Springboard's default paging behavior could have been a result of the new option to add parts of web sites as apps on the main screen, not necessarily a predecessor to the App Store.

I agree with Skylar. The whole OS was destined to have some sort of application support. It was just a matter of time, and the App Store was announced. Ingenius idea by Apple but I think many of us had a sense they would do something to compete with the Jailbroken apps of the 1.X firmware days. The firmwares were just screaming for an app store.

Well, thanks to jailbreaking Apple got many ideas about the App Store, and pushed it out earlier.
