I've been playing for about 3 years and took lessons for about 1 and a half. Lessons were always about learning songs instead of technique, but I was always to shy to say anything so I never asked. I have barely advanced my skill since after the first 6 months of playing. What can I do to get better? I'm pretty decent but can only play like 3 or 4 songs from start to finish. I want to learn sweeping and other stuff but I'm just stuck. Where do I start?

You've gotta pick a song, and practice it over and over for hours until you've got it. Then you move on to a harder one, and repeat. It's all about how much time and effort you put into it. You can't practice 2 times a week for 30 minutes and expect to get better.

    - Play every song with alternate picking, even if it doesn't require it. It builds skill. Then you can play epic solos.
    - Buy one of those CD players (or an app) that slows the song down. This is great, as you can play along with the song before you can actually play the song, if you know what I mean.
    - Look up videos on YouTube. There are tons of them, and they really help.
    - Learn to read music, if you don't know already. Don't just read tab. I played violin before guitar so I already knew, but it does help.
    - As said above, learn the scales. Minor/major pentatonic scale being the most important, these will really help with solos. Again, practice them with alternate picking.
    - When you think you're pretty good, get a better guitar. It motivates you to practice more...
    - Technique is learned from song to song. You can't learn technique without learning it through playing music. Otherwise you'd get overly bored and go crazy.
    - When you need help, ask someone. Or go on a guitar forum, like Ultimate Guitar, they can definitely help.

And practice a lot, but take breaks so your brain doesn't start to melt.

Lucky. My grandpa had a Gibson electric guitar that's extremely old and in perfect condition, valued at over $30,000. Hopefully one day I'll get it.

Search for some tutorials on YouTube for improving your technique, there's a bunch of them.

Pick a song and play the chords. Then when you master the song you can get better. So play the song until you are SICK of it. Ok.

NOW! Try playing new things. Find some high notes that sound cool. Just mess around like you know what your doing.

I don't honestly play guitar, but I do know like seven chords. Once I was playing a simple song, and I was playing a really cool strum and then a couple high notes, and one kid afterwards asked if I could teach him guitar. Haha. I explained. :)

You get better by watching others too and asking them. I excelled in playing drums when I asked some drummers to teach me a little this or that. You also learn by pushing your abilities!

Btw I'm jealouzzzzzzzzzz that you can play a lot of songs! Just remember theres those who also think you are kooooool!
