    Is the back curved or flat.

    Curved = 2G
    Flat = 1st Gen

    Curved Back = 2G
    Volume Control = 2G
    New Firmware 2.1 or 2.2 = Usually 2G

    No, iPod Touch 1st gen has that too.

    The easiest way is:

    The curved back thing, and also notice the new WiFi "Bubble"

    Actually the 2g comes loaded with 2.1.1 NOT 2.1. 2.1 is only for 1g.

    How about this one . . .

    Play a song without headphones or plugged into any dock. Turn the volume all the way up.

    If you hear music, 2G. If you hear absolutely nothing, 1G.

    If it has a built in speaker, it will have two black buttons on it's left side and if it is very thin and has a contoured egdes than it is 2G.

    If it's 1G it it will come in a black box with a picture of the iPod. If It is 2G it will have a white box and a transparent front so you can see the iPod.
